　 沖縄（岩瀬ら 1990，Nishi 1993，Nishi 1996, Fiege Hove 1999）． インド－西太平洋（Hove Kupriyanova 2009）．

　 S. giganteus は共生するサンゴの種類により大きさに差， サンゴは S. giganteus に安全で摂食に都合の良い生息場所を提供， S. giganteus はサンゴがヒトデの食害を受けるのを防ぐ（林 1992）．
